About This Program

This Program serves as a refresher on cultural competency for Public Health Service officers in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS Commissioned Corps) preparing for deployment. This Program consists of 3 Modules and should take about 30 minutes to complete. Before taking this Program, all Public Health Service officers should have already completed the Cultural Competency Program for Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Response e-learning program.

In Module 1, Culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS), you will review core components of culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) and how the cultural identities of the people you serve can affect how they experience a disaster or emergency.

In Module 2, Effective communication, you will review best practices for communicating effectively when navigating language and cultural barriers.

In Module 3, On the ground services, you will review how to adapt the services you provide to meet diverse cultural and linguistic needs.


Learning Objectives

After completing this Program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of practicing cultural competency.
  • Describe how the cultural identities of the people you serve can affect how they experience a disaster or emergency.
  • List best practices for communicating effectively when working with an interpreter.
  • Describe how to adapt the services you provide to meet diverse cultural and linguistic needs.

How to Obtain a Certificate of Completion

For successful completion of this Program and to obtain a Certificate of Completion (Statement of Participation), you must register on this site, review each Module, earn a minimum post-test score of 75%, and complete the Course evaluation survey. Certificates and statements of credit are immediately available on the My Progress page.
